River bounce back with 4-2 win, Estudiantes beat Boca
05/12/08 16:38
River Plate, knocked out of the Libertadores Cup in astonishing style by nine-man San Lorenzo, bounced back to beat Gimnasia-La Plata 4-2 in the Argentine championship on Sunday. The win took Diego Simeone’s team top of the Clausura championship on goal difference from Estudiantes, who beat Boca Juniors 1-0. River badly needed a good result after a week in which they lost 1-0 to arch-rivals Boca Juniors and went out of the Libertadores Cup after squandering a 2-0 lead and drawing 2-2 with opponents who had two players sent off.

Atletico back in Champions League after 12 year wait
05/12/08 08:02
Diego Forlan repaid back a huge chunk of his 21 million euro transfer fee as he fired Atletico Madrid into the money-spinning Champions League for the first time in over a decade with a 1-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday. Uruguayan international Forlan was bought as a replacement for Fernando Torres, now at Liverpool, and his 16th goal of the season seconds before half-time helped Atletico qualify for the Champions League for the first time since the 1996/97 season. "It was a great pass from Maxi (Rodriguez) and we are delighted to be in the Champions League where we want to be," said Forlan.

Inter held by Siena as title race goes to wire

Inter Milan again wasted the chance to retain their Serie A title when they were held 2-2 at home by Siena on Sunday with Marco Materazzi having a penalty saved. Second-placed AS Roma beat Atalanta 2-1 to cut the gap to one point with one round of matches remaining next weekend in an exhilarating finish to the season. Inter, who lost to AC Milan last Sunday to spurn their first opportunity of sealing the scudetto, visit relegation-threatened Parma and Roma go to Catania, who could also go down.

Manchester United beat Wigan 2-0 on Sunday to clinch the club's 17th English title. A first-half penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo and a late strike by Ryan Giggs - on the day he equalled Bobby Charlton's record of appearances for United - sealed the tenth title under manager Sir Alex Ferguson. United finished two points clear of Chelsea, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Bolton at Stamford Bridge. Kevin Davies scored a late equaliser for Bolton after Andriy Shevchenko had given Chelsea the lead.

Bordeaux keep French title race bubbling over
05/11/08 01:09
Bordeaux maintained their title push with a 2-0 win against Sochaux which ensures their French championship duel with Lyon will go down to a nail-biting finale next week. Lyon, the six-time consecutive champions, emerged 1-0 winners from their home encounter with a Nancy team, fighting to retain third place, to maintain their two-point lead over Bordeaux. However the display from Alain Perrin's champions is likely to give Bordeaux renewed hope that Auxerre can cause an upset against Lyon in Burgundy next week.
