Spain triumphs at Euro 2008 final
06/30/08 18:34
Spain turned the Euro 2008 final into a football fiesta on Sunday, playing a dazzling passing game as they deservedly swept away Germany with a 1-0 victory. A brilliant 33rd-minute goal from striker Fernando Torres graced a magnificent final whose scoreline did not reflect the supremacy of the superb Spanish side. The long overdue victory in a major tournament sent fans in Madrid and all over Spain pouring on to the streets where they prepared for night-long celebrations, waving red and yellow banners and singing “Viva Espana.”

Russia into semis after 3-1 win over Dutch
06/22/08 00:37
Russia grabbed an unexpected place in the Euro 2008 semi-finals with a thoroughly deserved 3-1 extra-time win over Netherlands on Saturday. Goals from substitute Dmitry Torbinsky and playmaker Andrei Arshavin finished off a subdued Netherlands team in the extra period after the sides were level at 1-1 on 90 minutes. Russia had taken a deserved lead through Roman Pavlyuchenko 11 minutes into the second half but were pegged back by a Ruud van Nistelrooy header with just four minutes remaining.

U.S. beats Canada to win Peace Queen Cup
06/22/08 00:36
Angela Hucles scored in second-half stoppage time as the United States won the Peace Queen Cup on Saturday with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Canada. With the contest seemingly headed to overtime, Hucles provided the decisive goal by blasting a free-kick past Canadian goalkeeper Erin McLeod in the 92nd minute. “It was a battle, but you want to finish in the final, finish with a goal and finish first and we did that,” U.S. coach Pia Sundhage said. “It was great for us to come up with a win that way. The energy we got from this game, we will bring to Beijing.”

Italy’s Toni needs luck to prove doubters wrong
06/22/08 00:35
Struggling Luca Toni has failed to score at Euro 2008 but the Italy striker must not be discounted having proved the doubters wrong time and again. Sunday’s quarter-final against Spain in Vienna gives the tall, powerful striker the perfect chance to show that his mini-drought has been due to bad luck rather than bad form. Toni, a late developer who only came to prominence at 27, did find the net in the 1-1 Group C draw with Romania but his header was wrongly ruled out for offside.

Turkey show again they will never, ever give up
06/22/08 00:32
Turkey coach Fatih Terim said this week their greatest strength was they never give up but even he must have feared it was all over with a minute left of extra time in Friday’s Euro 2008 quarter-final with Croatia. Ivan Klasnic’s 119th minute goal seemed to have decided the game in favour of the Croatians, yet, unbelievably, there was still time for the absolute substantiation of Terim’s faith when Semih Senturk struck a stunning equaliser in the 122nd. Turkey then won the match in a penalty shootout to earn a semi-final meeting with Germany in Basel on Wednesday that had looked beyond them at almost every stage of the tournament.
