Argentina beat neighbours Uruguay 2-1 in a bruising World Cup qualifier on Saturday to end a run of six successive draws while South American group leaders Paraguay won again, 1-0 away to Colombia. Bolivia beat Peru 3-0 in the other match and coach Erwin Sanchez said he hoped that their win could help contribute to unity in the politically-divided nation. As the marathon 18-match campaign reached the halfway mark, Paraguay’s win in Bogota kept them top with 20 points, four ahead of Argentina.

Blaszczykowski leads Poland to win over Czechs

Jakub Blaszczykowski steered Poland to a 2-1 victory over Czech Republic in Saturday’s World Cup qualifier. The Borussia Dortmund player was involved in the opening goal scored by Pawel Brozek before adding the second himself in the 52nd minute. The Czechs pulled one back with three minutes left when Vaclav Sverkos set up fellow substitute Martin Fenin.

The future of France coach Raymond Domenech was left hanging in the balance on Saturday after a spirited Romania took a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw with the 1998 World Cup winners. Florentin Petre and Dorin Goian scored a goal apiece in a dominant first half to leave the hosts with the advantage after Franck Ribery had managed to claw a goal back for 'Les Bleus' in the 36th minute. It took until the 69th minute for France to draw level thanks to a stunning drive from Yoann Gourcuff, who chose arguably the best time to score his maiden international goal with a stunning 30-yarder.

Spain cruised to a 3-0 win over Estonia to maintain their 100 percent record after three matches in the World Cup qualifying Group 5. Spain coach Vicente del Bosque was finally able to field his two first-choice strikers, David Villa and Fernando Torres, after the Liverpool player returned from injury. The pair kept Estonian keeper Pavel Londak kept busy throughout much of the match but it was Real Betis defender Juanito who scored first, connecting with a free kick from Barcelona's Xavi Hernandez in the 34th minute.

Quaresma to make Serie A debut

Brief news ahead of this weekend’s matches in Italy’s Serie A. Portugal winger Ricardo Quaresma will make his Serie A debut for new club Inter Milan in Saturday’s home game against Catania (1830 GMT), coach Jose Mourinho told a news conference on Friday. Mourinho said injuries to Dejan Stankovic and Luis Jimenez had not left him shorthanded in midfield because Esteban Cambiasso and Javier Zanetti can be used despite their late return from duty with the Argentine national team.
