Doll quits as Dortmund coach

Thomas Doll resigned as coach of Borussia Dortmund after the side finished a disappointing 13th in the Bundesliga, the club said on Monday. Dortmund, the 1997 Champions League winners, said Doll had offered his resignation on Monday after a meeting with club executive Hans-Joachim Watzke and sporting director Michael Zorc. Doll took over 14 months ago and led Dortmund into the German Cup final, where they were beaten by Bayern Munich. They qualified for the UEFA Cup next season because Bayern will be playing in the Champions League.

San Lorenzo coach Ramon Diaz was sent off for throwing an object back into the crowd during his team’s 0-0 draw at Huracan in the Argentine championship on Sunday. The object narrowly missed Diaz when it was thrown at him by a supporter and he picked it up and threw it back. “They threw things at me for the whole game,” he told a news conference after the game. “It was a reaction, and I apologise.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic returned from injury to score twice as Inter Milan retained their Serie A title on Sunday with a 2-0 win at Parma, who were relegated. Inter’s triumph on the final day is their 16th championship and their third in a row, but the achievement was marred by a policeman being seriously injured in fights outside the ground, media reported. Coach Roberto Mancini also did not speak to reporters after the victory, sparking fresh media speculation he would not be continuing as manager.

Twente Enschede drew 0-0 with Ajax Amsterdam in the Dutch playoff final second leg on Sunday to secure a place in the Champions League third qualifying round 2-1 on aggregate. Twente will play in the competition for the first time while Ajax, who finished the regular season as runners-up to champions PSV Eindhoven, have to settle for the UEFA Cup. Twente dominated much of the match although Ajax forward Luis Suarez had the best chance midway through the first half when he shot narrowly wide.

Numancia secure promotion to the Primera Liga

Second division leaders Numancia secured promotion to the Primera Liga with a 0-0 draw at home to Alaves on Sunday. Numancia are 12 points ahead of fourth-placed Real Sociedad with four games left to play and have a superior head-to-head record over the team from San Sebastian. It will be only the fourth season in the Spanish top flight for Numancia who last won promotion in 2004, only to return to the second division after finishing 19th in the 2004-5 campaign.
