A dominant AC Milan beat Serie A leaders Inter 2-1 on Sunday to blow open the title race with second-placed AS Roma winning 3-0 at Sampdoria. Inter’s lead has been cut to three points with two games left after Filippo Inzaghi and Kaka scored early in the second half for Milan, who move into the final Champions League qualifying place after rivals Fiorentina lost 2-1 at Cagliari. Julio Cruz blasted in a free kick to pull one back for Inter, who went into the big derby knowing a victory would have meant they retained their title.

Third-placed Hull City, the only team who could have denied Stoke, were beaten 1-0 at Ipswich Town. West Bromwich Albion, who had all but secured their promotion last Monday, return to the top flight as champions after a 2-0 victory at Queen’s Park Rangers put them on 81 points, two more than Stoke.

Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has called on his players to end their season on a high in the light of mounting speculation that he could soon be sacked. Reports this week claim Eriksson will be replaced by City owner Thaksin Shinawatra at the end of the season. City were even moved to cancel Eriksson's regular press conference on Friday due to "exceptional circumstances". But Eriksson remains in charge for the trip to Anfield on Sunday and feels his players are fully focused on their short trip to Liverpool.

05/04/08 18:39
Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan's hopes of a summer transfer treasure chest may have risen after the club's billionaire owner Mike Ashley won a windfall on the roulette wheel, the Mail on Sunday reported. According to the British weekly, sports goods retailer Ashley won 1.3million pounds (2.5 million dollars) on a single spin of the wheel after a complex complete bet on black 17, the number favoured by James Bond. Ashley reportedly placed the bet at a luxurious casino in St James Street, in the London high-rollers' haunt of Mayfair.
