Poland coach announces 26-man list for Euro 2008

Poland's Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker on Thursday released a 26-player list from which he plans to draw his final 23-member squad for Euro 2008, the country's first ever European championships appearance. Beenhakker said he had trimmed six names from the initial 31-member list which he had announced on April 16. The excluded players, however, will remain on standby in case any of his picks are injured or fail to perform as Poland warm up for the June tournament in Austria and Switzerland.

Argentina keeps lead in FIFA rankings

Argentina remained No. 1 in the largely unchanged FIFA world rankings Wednesday, with the United States at No. 21. With just 20 international soccer games affecting the monthly list, Argentina was followed by Brazil, Italy, Spain and Germany. The Czech Republic, France, Greece, Portugal and the Netherlands completed the top 10. The only change in the top 20 was Cameroon’s jump over Mexico to 16th. No team in the top 50 rose or fell by more than two places.

Guardiola to be named Barcelona coach

Former club captain Pep Guardiola will replace Frank Rijkaard as Barcelona coach at the end of the season, Spanish media reported on Tuesday. Newspapers said that Barcelona’s delegate commission, which includes club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Txiki Begiristain, had met on Monday and recommended that Guardiola should replace Rijkaard as first team coach. Barcelona-based daily Sport said the decision would be ratified by the rest of the board and made official at the end of the season.

Nani was sent off in the first half at Old Trafford on Saturday after headbutting West Ham defender Lucas Neill. The Portuguese player faces a three-match ban, ruling him out of United's crucial final Premier League game against Wigan, and could also be hit with a fine by United.
