Turkey midfielder Emre Belozoglu has been ruled out of his country's Euro 2008 Group A survival battle with Switzerland on Wednesday, head coach Fatih Terim confirmed. Emre, who has just left Newcastle for Turkish club Fenerbahce, has suffered a torn hamstring and is also likely to miss Turkey's final match in Group A, against 2004 semi-finalists Czech Republic, Fatih indicated. The loss of Emre means both teams will be without one of their most important players with the Swiss captain and leading scorer Alex Frei having been ruled out of the tournament with knee ligament damage.

David Villa was a master of understatement after making the biggest statement of the European Championship on the field. Villa scored three times Tuesday in Spain’s resounding 4-1 victory over Russia, a win that confirmed the Spaniards as a team to beat at the European Championship. “Three goals, a hat trick with the national team—it’s started well,” said Villa, who scored the tournament’s first hat trick since Patrick Kluivert of the Netherlands in 2000. “We’re off to a good start. But there are still two games to go.”

It will be a very balanced match (in Geneva).”
