    05/04/08 18:39

Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan's hopes of a summer transfer treasure chest may have risen after the club's billionaire owner Mike Ashley won a windfall on the roulette wheel, the Mail on Sunday reported. According to the British weekly, sports goods retailer Ashley won 1.3million pounds (2.5 million dollars) on a single spin of the wheel after a complex complete bet on black 17, the number favoured by James Bond. Ashley reportedly placed the bet at a luxurious casino in St James Street, in the London high-rollers' haunt of Mayfair.

  • Rangers head for final but Italy upset over tactics

    05/03/08 08:09

Teams in Europe often play defensively away from home, but it is rare for them to do the same in the home leg. Scottish side Rangers reached the UEFA Cup final after a 0-0 draw in Glasgow last week, where they barely ventured forward, and a 4-2 win on penalties at Fiorentina on Thursday following another goalless draw. The tactics from the Scottish title-chasers have upset Fiorentina and many football followers in Italy, despite the fact Italian sides used to be famous for their defensive play.

  • Scholes strike sends United into Moscow final

    04/30/08 08:24

A stunning goal from Paul Scholes gave Manchester United a 1-0 win over Barcelona on Tuesday to set up an all-English Champions League final against either Liverpool or Chelsea in Moscow next month. On a night of drama at Old Trafford in which Barcelona played some outstanding attacking football, it was hardly more fitting that Scholes scored the goal that secured his club their place in the showdown at the Luzhniki Stadium on May 21. Scholes was suspended for United’s epic victory over Bayern Munich in the 1999 final, and Ferguson had already said he would play in the final if they qualified.

Albacete B’s Belgian youth international Ritchie Kitoko has made a report to the police over racist abuse received from a Daimiel player during a match in the Spanish Tercera division (fourth tier) last weekend. “He was insulting me throughout the whole match, with racist swearwords, and telling me to go back to my country and so on,” Kitoko was quoted as saying by sports daily Marca on Tuesday. “You hear a lot of things on football pitches but this is too much. Also, after the game he attacked me and this should never happen. I am very angry, because it is the first time in my life anything like this has happened.”

  • Werder call truce with Klasnic

    04/30/08 08:22

Werder Bremen and their striker Ivan Klasnic called a truce Tuesday following an emergency meeting after the Croatia international launched a 1.5 million euros (2.3 million US dollars) lawsuit over the mishandling of his kidney complaint. Werder's director of sport Klaus Allofs and coach Thomas Schaaf met with Klasnic and his lawyers for several hours to discuss the legal action as well as recent comments made by Klasnic's wife, Patricia. "We could have better reacted in some situations, the matter has been addressed and cleared up," said the club in an official statement.
