CSKA Sofia moved within one victory of their 31st Bulgarian league title with a 4-0 drubbing of Marek Dupnitsa on Friday. The Reds, as CSKA are known in the Balkan country, top the table with 68 points from 26 matches and will wrap up the championship if they beat mid-table Botev Plovdiv on Wednesday. Brazilian striker Nei scored twice, with the other goals coming from Romanian midfielder Florentin Petre and Yordan Yurukov.

Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli believes Rangers are now favourites to reach the UEFA Cup Final despite the Glasgow side's failure to score at home in a goalless semi-final first-leg tie here at Ibrox Stadium. Prandelli's men were frustrated by some dogged defending by a team who have become travel experts this season to put themselves on the brink of Rangers's first appearance in a European final for 36 years. And while the 'Viola' will enjoy home advantage in Florence next Thursday, Prandelli believes his side's best chance will come from taking Rangers to a lottery of a penalty shoot-out.

David Beckham could play for England at the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa if he looks after himself, coach Fabio Capello has said. “The door is open. He played the last game, and did well against France. I see him play for Los Angeles Galaxy every now and then,” the Italian told sports daily Marca on Friday. “It depends. There are players who are 33 or 34, who look after themselves very well. They understand that physically they aren’t what they used to be and take more care. A lot depends on this.”

UEFA Cup favourites Bayern Munich will again have to produce the goods on their travels next week after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Zenit St Petersburg in the home leg of their semi-final on Thursday. Bayern will need to score at least once in St Petersburg after an own goal on the hour from Lucio cancelled out Franck Ribery’s first-half opener. There is all to play for in Florence next Thursday as well after Rangers and Fiorentina battled out a 0-0 draw at Ibrox.

Mexico to start World Cup qualifiers with interim coach

Mexico will start their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign under interim coach Jesus Ramirez, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) said Thursday. Ramirez, coach of the Mexican team which won the under-17 world championship in 2005, has taken over on a caretaker basis following the sacking of Hugo Sanchez last month. “Jesus Ramirez will coach the team for the warm-up games against Argentina and Peru (in June), as well as the matches in the second preliminary round of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers for South Africa 2010,” said the FMF in a statement.
