Champions Boca Juniors beat UA Maracaibo 3-0 on Tuesday to scrape into the last 16 of the Libertadores Cup on goal difference after Atlas had helped the Argentine side by drawing 1-1 at Colo Colo. Boca pipped Chilean champions Colo Colo on goal difference for second place in Group Three after both finished with 10 points from six games. Mexico’s Atlas topped the group with 11 points.

Bayern Munich captain Oliver Kahn was right to criticise Frank Ribery and Luca Toni earlier in the season, the Italian World Cup winner acknowledged on Wednesday. Kahn caused a stir in December when publicly attacking the two new recruits in a thinly-veiled attack on their consistency. "One or two among the new players have to understand that here, two or three matches isn't enough. Bayern is not Marseille or Florence, but rather AC Milan, Real, Barca and Manchester United."

Vukovic ban reduced, cleared to play in Olympics

Australian league goalkeeper Danny Vukovic has had his nine-month ban for manhandling referee Mark Shields reduced to six months and split to allow him to play at the Beijing Olympics. Vukovic, who plays for the Central Coast Mariners club, was initially suspended for 15 months after being sent off during the A-League final in February. The ban was later reduced to nine months on appeal. An independent committee ruled on Wednesday that his suspension be further reduced, Football Federation Australia said in a statement.

Barca title hopes look doomed after derby draw

Barcelona's chances of winning the Spanish title looked doomed on Saturday after a 0-0 draw in the local derby with Espanyol. "We haven't thrown in the towel but we need to win the next matches and I'm going to motivate them to win the next game," said Barca coach Frank Rijkaard. Despite dominating the game for long periods, the Spanish giants failed to find the net in their Nou Camp stadium thanks to a combination of poor finishing and solid defending from Espanyol.
