  • Man United leave it late to earn precious point

    04/20/08 09:57

Carlos Tevez pounced late to earn Manchester United a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday just when it looked like the Premier League title race had been blasted wide open. Roque Santa Cruz’s 21st minute shot had given Rovers the lead and they were hanging on grimly despite intense United pressure until Tevez swooped to flick in a header with two minutes of normal time remaining. Defeat would have left United just two points above Chelsea, who they face at Stamford Bridge next week, but thanks to Tevez they are three clear with three games to go and still in the driving seat thanks to their superior goal difference.

    04/20/08 09:56

Arsenal restored some pride by beating Reading 2-0 on Saturday, though the result will not bother Manchester United who can close in on the English Premier League title with victory at Blackburn. United beat Arsenal 2-1 last Sunday, a result which killed off the Gunners' hopes of winning the title, leaving only themselves and Chelsea in the hunt. But Arsenal, who will be trophyless this season, at least gave their fans at Emirates Stadium something to cheer with a 2-0 win over the Royals.

Santos scraped into the last 16 of the Libertadores Cup by coming from behind to beat Cucuta 2-1 at home with a last-minute goal on Wednesday. Argentina’s San Lorenzo also qualified with a 3-0 win over Venezuelan champions Caracas FC, whose goalkeeper Vicente Rosales scored an own goal and gave away another with a dreadful blunder. Santos finished second in Group Six with 10 points, one ahead of Guadalajara whose 3-0 away win over Bolivian champions San Jose was in vain.

Bayern Munich moved closer to securing the Bundesliga title Wednesday after rallying for a 3-1 victory at Eintract Frankfurt. Frankfurt pulled ahead in the 29th minute through Benjamin Kohler, but watched on as Daniel van Buyten equalized at the 60-minute mark before Italy striker Luca Toni scored a brace within 11 second-half minutes to decide the game. Bayern’s fourth win in its past five games means it has a 10-point lead over Werder Bremen, who won 2-1 at Hansa Rostock on Tuesday, with five matches to play.
