Guadalajara continue America’s misery in Mexico
04/15/08 09:49
Guadalajara survived a late fightback to beat America 3-2 in a meeting of Mexico’s two biggest clubs, piling on the misery for their opponents. The defeat at the Jalisco stadium in Sunday night’s game extended America’s winless domestic run to 10 matches and left Mexico’s richest team rooted to the bottom of Group Two with eight points from 14 games. Guadalajara, who claim to be the country’s most popular club and field only Mexican players, stayed top of Group Three with 29 points.

Surprise leaders Rubin Kazan stretched their perfect start to five matches after a brace by Turkey striker Gokdeniz Karadeniz helped them to a 4-0 away rout of Khimkhi. Dynamo Moscow stayed second, two points behind the leaders, after Bulgarian Tsvetan Genkov and strike partner Dani scored two goals apiece in a 4-3 home win over city rivals Spartak. Champions Zenit St Peterbsurg remained in the bottom half of the table following a 1-1 home draw with Krylya Sovietov Samara that left them nine points off the pace.

Juve beat 10-man Milan in thriller
04/13/08 09:18
Juventus dealt a potentially fatal blow to 10-man AC Milan's Champions League hopes with a 3-2 win in blockbuster match in Turin on Saturday. Goals from Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet and Hassan Salihamidzic gave the hosts the edge over the reigning European champions, who counted two Filippo Inzaghi goals while Daniele Bonera was dismissed in the second half. Juve thus closed the gap on second-placed AS Roma to seven points and they look almost certain to secure a place in Europe's premier competition next season.

Barca title hopes suffer new blow at Recreativo
04/13/08 09:17
Barcelona’s hopes of wresting the league title from Real Madrid suffered another blow on Saturday when they twice surrendered the lead to draw 2-2 at relegation-threatened Recreativo Huelva. Samuel Eto’o put Barca in front at the start of each half but Recreativo’s Argentine striker Marco Ruben hit back twice with headed equalisers—the first a controversial effort that did not appear to cross the line. The draw left Barca six points behind leaders Real Madrid with six games to play but the champions could extend that to nine if they beat struggling Real Murcia at the Bernabeu on Sunday.

Werder thrash Schalke to go second behind Bayern
04/13/08 09:16
Werder Bremen swept to a 5-1 victory over Schalke 04 on Saturday to move up to second place behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. The goals came from Frank Baumann, Boubacar Sanogo, Markus Rosenberg and Ivan Klasnic, who scored twice, as Schalke once again paid the price for failing to take their chances. Eliminated by Barcelona in the Champions League last eight on Wednesday due largely to their poor finishing, Schalke were no better as they dominated Werder in the first half hour.
