Mourinho urges Lampard and Terry to stay
03/16/07 19:53 Jose Mourinho said on Friday he wanted John Terry and Frank Lampard to stay with him at Chelsea until his contract ran out in 2010, despite frenzied speculation all three might leave the club at the end of the season. The Portuguese coach said he would not make decisions for his captain and vice-captain but had sat down with them and told them "what they have in their hearts is better than any advice." "I would love to see them stay at the club and, especially if I stay here till 2010, I would love them to be with me," Mourinho said. "They belong to Chelsea. They belong to Chelsea history, so when people have such strong links and feelings and success together there is no reason for a change," he said. More.

Spurs handed Sevilla test!
03/16/07 13:30 Martin Jol's charges have made good progress through the competition and proved too good for Braga in the last round and their reward is a meeting with the holders. Sevilla survived a real scare against Shakhtar Donetsk to progress and will prove tough nuts for Spurs to crack. AZ Alkmaar sent Newcastle packing on Thursday and they were paired with Werder Bremen at Friday's draw in Glasgow. Bayer Leverkusen proved too good for Lens in the last round and will tackle Osasuna for a place in the last four, while Espanyol will face Benfica as the three Spanish sides were kept apart.

River hold LDU, Tolima shock for Gremio
03/16/07 07:35 River Plate, trailing 1-0 and down to 10 men at halftime, fought back to drew 1-1 at LDU to keep their Libertadores Cup campaign alive on Thursday. Gremio, another of the pre-tournament favourites, went down to a shock 1-0 defeat at Colombian provincial side Deportes Tolima in another of Thursday's game. The results completed a bad week for the favourites after Boca Juniors lost 2-0 to Toluca on Wednesday and titleholders Internacional were thumped 3-0 by Velez Sarsfield. More.

Espanyol hammer Maccabi Haifa 4-0 to progress
03/16/07 07:35 Espanyol romped to a 4-0 home victory over Maccabi Haifa in their second knockout round, second leg to progress to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals on Thursday. The Catalans scored three times in the space of nine minutes, early in the second half, with goals from playmaker Ivan de la Pena and strikers Raul Tamudo and Luis Garcia. Walter Pandiani added a fourth at the end. Haifa had held Espanyol to a 0-0 draw in the first leg but could find little response to the home side's three-goal blast, despite creating chances in the first half. More.

Late Sabrosa penalty settles Benfica nerves
03/16/07 07:24 Simao Sabrosa's penalty three minutes from time gave Benfica a 3-1 win over Paris St. Germain on Thursday and sent them through to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals 4-3 on aggregate. Sabrosa put Benfica in front after 14 minutes with a shot from inside the penalty area from a cross by striker Nuno Gomes. Benfica doubled their lead after 27 minutes through Armando Petit's shot from outside the area over the head of PSG goalkeeper Mickael Landreau. The French team refused to lie down, however, and striker Pauleta, Portugal's all-time leading scorer with 47 goals in 87 internationals, got a goal back with a header after 32 minutes to level the tie at 2-2.
