One goal in the closing moments meant more to David Villa than his hat trick earlier in the European Championship. With a stunning burst in injury time, Villa put Spain into the European Cup quarterfinals Saturday. He outraced two Sweden defenders to a long pass and sent it into the net for a 2-1 victory. It was his fourth goal in two games and put Spain at six points in Group D, three more than Sweden. Spain won the group when Russia beat Greece 1-0 in a night game.

Netherlands beat France to reach quarter-finals

The Dutch, who beat world champions Italy 3-0 in their first game, are certain to finish top of Group C and join Portugal and Croatia as the third team to reach the last eight. Greece have had enough time to digest their opening Euro 2008 defeat and are ready to go flat out for victory against Russia on Saturday, said coach Otto Rehhagel. The holders lost 2-0 to Sweden in their first Group D match in Salzburg on Tuesday and need to reignite their title bid at the same venue against Russia. “I am convinced my boys will give all they have,” Rehhagel told reporters on Friday.

Gianluigi Buffon saved an 81st-minute penalty by Adrian Mutu to earn world champions Italy a 1-1 draw with Romania that kept their Euro 2008 title hopes alive on Friday. Striker Mutu put Romania ahead 10 minutes into the second half when he pounced on Gianluca Zambrotta’s poor back header. But Italy leveled immediately as Christian Panucci prodded the ball over the line following a Giorgio Chiellini header. Italy, humbled 3-0 by Netherlands in their opening Group C game on Monday, will feel hard done by after striker Luca Toni had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside before the interval.

Cardiff teenager signs long-term contract with Arsenal

Cardiff City teenager Aaron Ramsey signed a long-term contract with Premier League Arsenal for an undisclosed fee on Friday. Ramsey, 17, joins the north London club after being courted by Champions League winners Manchester United and and Everton. “We are delighted to have signed Aaron Ramsey,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said in a statement. “He is still only 17, but has already shown that he is a very intelligent and mature player with great quality.” According to English media reports Ramsey, a Wales Under-21 international and Cardiff’s youngest ever player at the age of 16, rejected an approach by Manchester United after being flown to Switzerland to meet Wenger.
