Tuncay Sanli scored in the first half and Semih Senturk added a second late on to secure Euro 2008 finalists Turkey a 2-0 victory over Finland in their final friendly before next month’s tournament. With fast, short passing Turkey controlled the game in the first half and went ahead after 15 minutes when Sabri Sarioglu crossed for Tuncay to score. Finland came into the game, played in Duisburg, Germany, after the break and striker Mikael Forssell wasted a good chance to equalise after an hour.

Chelsea have followed up the dismissal of manager Avram Grant by sacking his assistant Henk ten Cate, the Premier League club said on their Web site www.chelseafc.com on Thursday. “Chelsea Football Club can confirm we have terminated Henk Ten Cate’s contract today,” the club said. “As a result of the team management changes at Chelsea and in the light of any forthcoming appointment, it was clear this was the correct decision for all parties.

Iraq to play WCup qualifier after FIFA lift ban

Iraq's World Cup qualifier with Australia will go ahead this weekend after football's world governing body FIFA on Thursday "provisionally and conditionally" lifted its 12-month ban on Iraq taking part in international competition. Sunday's match in Brisbane had been under threat after FIFA suspended Iraq following an Iraqi governmental decree last week dissolving the Iraqi National Olympic Committee (NOC) and all national sport federations. A FIFA spokesman said that it had received correspondence from the Iraqi government confirming the Iraq Football Association (IFA) was not part of its decree.

LDU hold America away in Libertadores

Ecuadorean champions LDU held America to a 1-1 draw away from home in the first leg of their South American Libertadores Cup semi-final on Tuesday. Forward Luis Bolanos gave LDU, the first Ecuadorean team to reach the last four since 1998, the lead in the 63rd minute before Enrique Esqueda levelled 10 minutes later. Both teams had a player sent off in a bad-tempered game that produced several skirmishes and blatant time-wasting from the visitors.
