    05/28/08 08:21

Ecuadorean champions LDU held America to a 1-1 draw away from home in the first leg of their South American Libertadores Cup semi-final on Tuesday. Forward Luis Bolanos gave LDU, the first Ecuadorean team to reach the last four since 1998, the lead in the 63rd minute before Enrique Esqueda levelled 10 minutes later. Both teams had a player sent off in a bad-tempered game that produced several skirmishes and blatant time-wasting from the visitors.

The 22-year-old, who plays for Saint-Etienne, scored in the 58th minute, collecting the ball with his back to the goal, turning his defender and hitting a powerful shot into the top left corner from just inside the penalty area. He got his second goal in the 85th off Nicolas Anelka’s cross. Gomis is competing for a spot on France’s roster. The team must cut seven players to get down to the 23-man limit.

  • Bolivians given altitude reprieve

    05/28/08 08:17

Bolivia’s soccer team was given a reprieve from what it calls soccer apartheid when the sport’s world governing body on Tuesday suspended its ban on internationals played at high altitude. FIFA had effectively prohibited Bolivian capital La Paz and Ecuadorean capital Quito from staging World Cup qualifiers because of the altitude, when they imposed a limit of 2,750 meters above sea level in December. The only exceptions to the high altitude ban were if visiting players were given one week to adapt to games over 2,750 meters and 15 days for games over 3,000 meters. Foreign clubs, however, are obliged to release their players only five days ahead of internationals.

    05/26/08 00:31

Turkey lost a Euro 2008 warm-up friendly 3-2 to Uruguay here on Sunday as Fatih Terim's Turks suffered a setback. Terim rang the changes, fielding only four of the starters who beat Slovakia 1-0 last Tuesday in another German friendly, to see what his squad have in reserve. Defender Servet Cetin was out injured, as was midfielder Mehmet Aurelio and their absence was keenly felt. Arda Turan opened the scoring with an early header from a cross by Hamit Altintop.
